Quid hoc vel illud ad te?
I.
Fiam, ne ártsd bele mindenbe magad, és ne gondold, hogy mindennel neked kell törődnöd. Mi közöd neked ehhez vagy ahhoz, te csak kövess engem. Mi közöd ahhoz, hogy az ilyen-e vagy olyan, vagy az a másik így vagy úgy cselekszik vagy beszél? Nem hiányzik az neked, hogy másokért felelj, elég ha magadról számot kell adnod. Minek bonyolódol hát mindebbe? Íme, én mindent ismerek, és mindent látok a nap alatt, tudom, ki-ki hogy vagyon, mit gondol, mit akar, és mi célra irányul igyekezete. Rám kell hát bíznod mindent, te pedig maradj bátran békében, hadd sürgölődjenek a sürgölődők, ahogy akarnak. Felelniük kell majd mindenért, amit tesznek, mondanak, mert engem meg nem téveszthetnek.
II.
Ne igyekezz azon, hogy a neved nagy árnyékot vessen, se azon, hogy sokaknak barátja légy, se azon, hogy bizalmas kapcsolatba kerülj az emberekkel. Mindez elvon attól, ami fontos, és nagy sötétséget támaszt a szívedben. Örömest szólnék hozzád, és fölfedném előtted titkaimat, ha érkezésemet szorgalmasan figyelnéd, és szíved kapuját megnyitnád előttem. Légy éber, virrassz az imádságban, és alázkodjál meg mindenben.
Chap. 24.
De evitatione curiosæ inquisitionis super alterius vita.

Fili, noli esse curiosus nec vacuas gerere sollicitudines. Quid hoc vel illud ad te? Tu me sequere. Quid enim ad te, utrum ille sit talis, vel talis, aut iste sic agit, vel loquitur? Tu non indiges respondere pro aliis, sed pro te ipso rationem reddas: quid ergo te implicas? Ecce ego omnes cognosco, et cuncta, quæ fiunt sub sole, video, et scio qualiter cum unoquoque sit, quod cogitet, quid velit, et ad quem finem tendat ejus intentio. Mihi igitur committenda sunt omnia; tu vero serva te in bona pace, et dimitte agitantem agitare quantum voluerit. Veniet super eum quidquid fecerit vel dixerit, quia me fallere non potest.

Non sit tibi curæ de magni nominis umbra, non de multorum familiaritate, nec de privata hominum dilectione: ista enim generant distractiones, et magnas in corde obscuritates. Libenter tibi loquerer Verbum meum, et abscondita revelarem, si adventum meum diligenter observares, et ostium cordis mihi aperires. Esto prudens, et vigila in orationibus et humilia te in omnibus.
CHAPTER XXIV
Of avoiding of curious inquiry into the life of another
1.
“My Son, be not curious, nor trouble thyself with vain cares. What is that to thee? Follow thou Me.(1) For what is it to thee whether a man be this or that, or say or do thus or thus? Thou hast no need to answer for others, but thou must give an answer for thyself. Why therefore dost thou entangle thyself? Behold, I know all men, and I behold all things which are done under the sun; and I know how it standeth with each one, what he thinketh, what he willeth, and to what end his thoughts reach. All things therefore are to be committed to Me; watch thou thyself in godly peace, and leave him who is unquiet to be unquiet as he will. Whatsoever he shall do or say, shall come unto him, for he cannot deceive Me.

“Trouble not thyself about the shadow of a great name, nor about the friendship of many, nor about the love of men towards thee. For these things beget distraction and great sorrows of heart. My word should speak freely unto thee, and I would reveal secrets, if only thou didst diligently look for My appearing, and didst open unto Me the gates of thy heart. Be sober and watch unto prayer,(2) and humble thyself in all things.”
