I. 

Fiam, ne keseredjél el amiatt, ha némelyek rosszat gondolnak, és olyasmit beszélnek rólad, amit nem hallasz szívesen. Neked magadról még rosszabb véleménnyel kell lenned, és úgy kell érezned, hogy senki náladnál gyarlóbb nincsen. Ha abból élsz, ami benned van, nem fogod sokba venni az elszálló szavakat. Nagy okosság az, hogy hallgatni tudj gonosz időben, magadba szállván hozzám térj, és meg ne háborodj az emberek ítéletén. 

II. 

Ne függjön a te békességed emberek szavától, beszédétől. Hiszen akár jónak, akár rossznak gondolnak is, azzal más emberré nem változol. Hol van az igaz békesség és igaz dicsőség? Ugye énbennem? Azért az, aki nem keresi az emberek tetszését, de nemtetszésüket sem akarja mindenáron kerülni, nagy békességben élhet. Az emberi szív minden nyugtalansága, az érzékek zűrzavara a rendetlen kívánságból és a fölösleges félelemből származik.

Contra linguas obtrectatorum.

1. 

Fili, non ægre feras, si quidam de te male senserint, et dixerint quod non libenter audias. Tu deteriora de te ipso sentire debes, et neminem inferiorem te credere. Si ambulas ab intra, non multum ponderabis volantia verba ab extra. Est non parva prudentia silere in tempore malo, et introrsus ad me converti, nec humano judicio disturbari.

Non sit pax tua in ore hominum; sive enim bene sive male interpretati fuerint, non es alter homo. Ubi est vera pax et vera gloria? Nonne in me? Et qui non appetit hominibus placere, nec displicere timet, multa fruetur pace. Ex inordinato amore, et vano timore, oritur omnis inquietudo cordis et distractio sensuum.

CHAPTER XXVIII

Against the tongues of detractors

1.

“My Son, take it not sadly to heart, if any think ill of thee, and say of thee what thou art unwilling to hear. Thou oughtest to think worse of thyself, and to believe no man weaker than thyself. If thou walkest inwardly, thou wilt not weigh flying words above their value. It is no small prudence to keep silence in an evil time and to turn inwardly unto Me, and not to be troubled by human judgment.

“Let not thy peace depend upon the word of men; for whether they judge well or ill of thee, thou art not therefore any other man than thyself. Where is true peace or true glory? Is it not in Me? And he who seeketh not to please men, nor feareth to displease, shall enjoy abundant peace. From inordinate love and vain fear ariseth all disquietude of heart, and all distraction of the senses.”
